Policy Review Fora
and Reports
The Policy Review Forum is especially geared for the policymakers.
CaPRI presents its signature (primary research–oriented)
multi-disciplinary policy-relevant research to policymakers
and stakeholders drawn from the public sector, the private
sector and civil society. At each forum a working paper
report is presented and feedback collected from the participants.
After the report is finalized it is then released to the
public.
A Landscape Assessment of
Political Corruption in Jamaica
The first Policy Review Forum was held on May 14th, 2007
and focused on corruption. The results of the first-ever
corruption survey and elite interviews were presented.
The success of the forum was seen in the fact that, despite
the ambience of public cynicism, 54% thought that the
forum would have some impact on anti-corruption measures
in Jamaica.
Foreign Policy: Making the
Economic Development Link
The second Policy Review Forum was held on June 27th,
2007 and focused on Foreign Policy. It sparked controversy
- with 2 newspaper articles being written about CaPRI's
recommendation that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Trade focus on its relationship with the United States
and Canada as these are likely to be long-term.
Educational Reform in Jamaica:
Recommendations from Ireland, Finland and Singapore
The third Policy Review Forum was held on October, 17th,
2007 and focused on Education Reform. This report made
recommendations based on countries with similar socio-economic
climates as Jamaica – Ireland, Finland and Singapore.
The recommendations in the report were well-received by
the invited guests, many of whom had their own suggestions
which were taken into considering for the second edition
of the report.
Resilience Potential: Assessing
Jamaica's "Bounce-Back" from Hurricane Dean
The fourth Policy Review Forum was held on November, 21st,
2007 and focused on the recovery of Jamaica from the impact
of Hurricane Dean which passed the island in August 2007.
The report came at the end of the 2007 hurricane season
and helped to facilitate discussion about the preparedness
of Jamaica against hurricanes. In addition to Jamaica's
preparedness, the report also discussed infrastructure,
the recovery period after the hurricane had passed and
ways the Government of Jamaica and citizens could make
the island less prone to hurricane damage in the future.
Investigating Informal Investment
Schemes in Jamaica
On January 16th, 2008 this report was launched and it
focused on the extent to which Jamaicans are likely to
have invested in informal investment schemes, the impact
of such schemes on the Jamaican economy and the effect
on the economy if such schemes were to fail using comparisons
and data from real-country cases.
